Historical NotesThis challah cover was embroidered by donor. A challah cover is used to cover the challah, which is a special type of braided egg bread served at the Shabbat dinner and on holidays.Label TextMarian Hershman embroidered this challah cover in 1973 with skills she learned as a child from an Hungarian-Jewish neighbor known as “Grandma Brown.” It was used to cover two challahs, ritually prepared braided egg breads, on the Friday evening dinner table when the family gathered to begin their observance of Shabbat (the Sabbath). The family used the challah cover until a Hershman grandchild created a new one for his grandparents.
