DescriptionThin, pointed dagger with flat ridge down the center. Yellow celluloid swirl patterned grip. Crown-shaped pommel with raised oak leaf motif. Handguard has curled ends and depicts an eagle with outstretched wings and swastika inscribed in a wreath below its feet on one side.Dimensions3 x 1 x 14.75 in. (7.6 x 2.5 x 37.5 cm)MarksTag that was attached to pommel and reads: "GERMANY / 23,589/2 / Wehrmacht . ceremonial / dagger [Hall]"
Manufacturer's Mark consists of a balance scale with "ACS" in the voids around it
To the right of that reads: "Alcoso / SOLINGEN" Etched Back bottom of blade
Historical NotesThis Wehrmacht ceremonial dagger was brought back from Europe after WWII by James L. Swauger. James L. Swauger was a western Pennsylvania native who worked at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History before being drafted into the army during World War II. He served with the 796th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion and earned the rank of captain by war's end. After the war, Swauger returned to the Carnegie Museum until his retirement.
