MarksCarnegie number 23589/5 written in black on handguard of (a) and on side of (b) between hanging straps.

(a) The manufacturer's mark consists of a balance scale with "AWS" in the voids around it and to the right of that reads, "Alcoso / SOLINGEN."

(b) On belt clip and strap clips is stamped: "D.R.G.M." On back of clip is a mark that reads: "U.E. 10" with a circular illegible stamp to the right.
Historical NotesThis Luftwaffe dagger was brought back from Europe after WWII by James L. Swauger. James L. Swauger was a western Pennsylvania native who worked at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History before being drafted into the army during World War II. He served with the 796th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion and earned the rank of captain by war's end. After the war, Swauger returned to the Carnegie Museum until his retirement. Luftwaffe was the official name for the German air force during WWII. Founded in 1933 and disbanded in 1946.
