DescriptionType PY-5 portable ammeter. Rounded rectangular medium brown wooden case. Brown leather strap handle across top. Front has fold-down door revealing colorless glass window with amperes measuring gauge behind featuring white background and arched gauge. Door has chrome metal hinge; on inside of door is yellowed plastic cover with two papers behind: a maker card and a calibration card. Front of wood case below the door is a zero adjustment screw. Proper left side of the wood case has current adjustment dial. Wooden case has four black rubber feet on the bottom and four black rubber feet on the back. Back of case has rectangular paper label applied at center with printed black text "PROPERTY OF / WESTINGHOUSE ELEC. & MFG. CO. / 132 / ENGINEERING AND ... DEPT. / PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA".

The gauge itself has black numbers "0" and "2-10" along top and red numbers along bottom.

Front calibration card on the inside of the door have printed and handwritten text has text including "CALIBRATION RECORD / Serial No. 758845 / Portable a.c. Ammeter / ... / Dep't Pgh. E. & S. Date 4-21-53".
MarksTop has black metal plate with text along top "5-10 A. AMMETER SER. 758845" and bottom "132".

Underside of strap has imprinted text from left to right: "32", "Glove / Leather" (unsure of first word), and "1250..."

Gauge has black text at top "Westinghouse / ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO.", center "AMPERES / ALTERNATING CURRENT", viewer's bottom left corner "STYLE 490907", and viewer's bottom right corner "TYPE PY SER. 758845".

Back maker card inside of the door have printed and handwritten text has text including "Westinghouse Type PY-5 Portable Ammeter / FOR A-C. AND D-C. Historical NotesWestinghouse portable ammeter. Donor Daniel J. McDermott's father-in-law, Calivn H. Furfari, worked for Westinghouse as a Mining Industry Application Engineer from 1948 to 1986. An ammeter measures currents in a circuit (amps), this particular ammeter measures alternating current. An ampere (amp) is the number of electrons flowing through a circuit.
