DescriptionTwenty-gallon (20-gallon) decorated stoneware food storage crock. Cylindrical, widest at belly. Exterior has gray salt glaze and front has cobalt freehand decoration including dots, vines, leaves, and tulips. Front has freehand capacity number at bottom center. Overhanging lip with protruding ring below. One applied lug handle on left and right side just below rim. Dark brown glaze on interior. DimensionsHeight x Width x Depth: 26 x 17 x 16 in. Historical NotesThis 20-gallon cobalt decorated stoneware storage crock is attributed to the Greensboro pottery group, located in Greensboro, Pennsylvania. Although unmarked and unsigned, this crock was most likely manufactured at the Hamilton and Jones or James Hamilton Potter companies circa 1850s-1880s. Its utilitarian use includes storage for dry goods or pickled food such as sauerkraut or pickles.
