DescriptionU.S. Army military uniform field jacket, also known as Ike jacket. Size 34L. Olive drab (brown-green) wool fabric. Collar with notched lapel. Shoulder straps, each with one brown plastic button. Four brown plastic buttons down front opening and one under proper right collar lapel; one metal snap at bottom of front opening that fastens fabric waist strap. Long-sleeve with two brown plastic buttons on each cuff. One breast pocket on each front panel each with one brown plastic button. One interior pocket inside each front panel. Each side of waist has adjustment strap with metal buckle. Lined with dark khaki fabric. Metal Quartermaster brass collar disk on proper left lapel and Enlisted U.S. brass collar disk on proper right lapel, each above the notch. Honorable discharge patch above the proper right breast pocket. Above the proper left breast pocket are five ribbon bars arranged in two rows; top row, from viewer's left to right: Purple Heart ribbon bar and Army Good Conduct ribbon bar; bottom row, from viewer's left to right: American Campaign ribbon bar; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign ribbon bar with bronze arrowhead device and gray metal star device (third device missing); and WWII Victory ribbon bar. Proper left sleeve has U.S. European Theater of Operations patch on shoulder and patch on forearm that is olive drab rectangle with four gold embroidered overseas service bars. Proper right sleeve has First Army subdued shoulder patch. Historical NotesPart of a collection that documents donor Steven W. Hays' father, Walter J. G. Hays, Jr.'s service in WWII. Walter J. G Hays, Jr. grew up at 5100 Bayard Street in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and attended Shady Side Academy. After high school he began to work at Sewickley Ice Company, which his father, William J. G. Hays, Sr., owned. Walter was drafted in 1943, trained in Bloomington, Illinois (where he met his future wife) and then was deployed to England. He trained for six months in England before participating in D-Day as well as the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He ended his service in Berlin where his group was relieved by MP troops who came to keep peace in Berlin after the war. When he returned to the States he first went back to Bloomington to marry Lucille Nagrass, who he met when he was stationed there, and then returned to Pittsburgh and his job at the ice plant. While he was in the service he worked in refrigeration repair and served in the 3712th Quartermaster Truck Company.
