Historical NotesThis wallet documents Otto Eisenfeld’s service as a “korporal” in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I. The letters “K. u. K.” refer to the “kaiserlich und königliche,” meaning “Imperial and Royal” army. It was also known as the “common army.” The letters “I. R. 40 4/komp” likely refer to Eisenfeld’s division and company. Otto Eisenfeld was born in Rzeszow, Poland and served in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I. He immigrated to the United States sometime after 1918 and worked for a Hill District bakery most of his life. He kept a journal, written in Polish, before or during the years of his military service.
