Historical NotesThis Draai Laag Brewing Company bottle is one of the last ones produced under the name Draai Laag before the brewery changed to Strange Roots Experimental Ales in 2018. This also marked a shift away from experimental sour brews to more conventional beers. The Millvale brewery focused on Belgian-style sour beers when they started in 2011 as one of the first craft breweries in the region. Millvale native Dennis Hock started the brewery after experimenting with the brewing process in college and abroad while in the military. The name Draai Laag came from the Dutch word for turncoat and refers to Hock’s ancestor Simon Girty, a Revolutionary War turncoat who fought with the Native Americans (who raised him) and the British.
