Historical NotesHolly Van Ormer (Dick) was born on June 1, 1941 in Cumberland, Maryland. She was diagnosed as leagally blind at the age of 6 and attended a school for the blind in Baltimore for two years. Van Ormer received a bachelor's degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and a master's degree in education with a specialization in rehabilitation counseling and special education from the University of Pittsburgh. Paul Dick and Van Ormer met at the University of Pittsburgh and married on December 11, 1965. Van Ormer was the first female rehabilitation counselor at the Pennsylvania Office for the Blind. She then ran a program at St. Francis Hospital that elevated preschool children with developmental delays due to emotional trauma for 20 years. Due to lack of funding, Van Ormer transferred to St. Francis' children's department to provide therapy and psychotherapy for children and parents of children with emotional disorders.
