The NAR holds local and national model rocket competitions. Jay Apt became a NAR member in 1962, and, with his father, and attended his first national championship model rocket meet (NARAM-6) in August 1964 at NASA’s Wallops Island Virginia site. The next month he founded the Pittsburgh model rocket club, the Steel City Section of the NAR. He and teammate Dave Bayard won the national team championship the following August at NARAM-7 in Aberdeen, Maryland. He served as the press officer the following year at NARAM-8 in Clinton County, Ohio. At NARAM-9 in August 1967, he and teammate Jim Davis won the national team championship, where Vice President Hubert Humphry presented the awards. Jay Apt remained active with the NAR and this plaque commemorates his three terms on the NAR Board of Trustees. He attended the 50th National Association of Rocketry Annual Meet (NARAM-50) in Manassas, Virginia in August 2008, including a reunion of long-standing members held at the facilities of Aurora Flight Sciences at the Manassas Airport.
