DescriptionTriccheballacche. Musical percussion instrument consisting of three vertical wooden hammers (meat tenderizers) held in a mobile fan shape by two horizontal wood braces. Each hammer has two metal disks (can ends) screwed to the side; one of the hammers only has one disk. Hammers have white, pink, and green ribbons affixed to them.Dimensions21 × 12 × 2.75 in. InscriptionsCircular metal-rimmed tag tied to top brace with fabric cord and featuring handwritten graphite number “M29.3”.
MarksRectangular paper adhesive label on side of the top brace at center has the maker’s name handwritten in ink “D. Palombo”.
Historical NotesThe donor Anna Marie Fiori held onto a majority of the instruments used by the group in their performances, including noisemakers made by Dominick and Tom Palombo, Dominick Palombo also made a triccheballacche for the troupe, a Southern Italian instrument made of wooden mallets that clack in a rhythm. Collection includes handmade dolls, ceramic conga (quartara), copper conga, Sardinian flute and pan pipe, ram’s horn, conch shell horn, wrist and hand castanets, Jew’s harp, triccheballacche, concertina, various handmade noisemakers, tambourine, and recorder. I Campagnoli was an Italian American folk troupe from the Pittsburgh area comprised of approximately 40 core performers with a focus on Italian folk singing and dancing. Originally directed by Lorenzo “Larry” Malfatti and Eugene Richards (and later Jane Ferro) and sponsored by the Italian Sons and Daughters of Italy, the group formed in 1964 and performed throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as in Italy and at the opening of the Italian Village in Epcot Center and Busch Gardens.
