Dr. Garwood was a teacher at the age of 16 in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, and became principal of Homewood Schools in 1909 and Associated Superintendent of North Side Pittsburgh in 1914. From December 1919 to June of 1920, the Garwoods lived in Paris because he was appointed European Director of Junior American Red Cross. Once back in the United States, he continued his educational endeavors for fifty more years, dying in October of 1965 in Pittsburgh.
