Historical NotesA mural from the former St. Wenceslaus Roman Catholic Church on the North Side. The mural of Saint Wenceslaus was located--among several others--on the ceiling above the altar. The altar ceiling murals of St. Wenceslaus Roman Catholic Church featured "Christ the Divine Teacher" surrounded by several Bohemian Saints: Wenceslaus, Ludmilla, Cyril, Methodius, Agnes, Procopius, John Nepomucene, and Adalbert. Wenceslaus was located immediately to the right of Jesus. An ethnic Bohemian (Czech) parish, St. Wenceslaus was founded in 1871 and named after the beloved Duke of Prague, Wenceslaus, who was murdered in the year 929. (He is the patron saint of the Bohemian people.) The Church was located at 883 Progress Street, across from the main Heinz plant at the foot of the 16th Street Bridge. After 118 years of service, the Church closed in 1989 due to dwindling parishioners and high maintenance costs to keep the parish running.
