DescriptionFraternal ribbon badge with paper envelope. Silk ribbon. Top: picture of two shaking hands (straight pin in back). Front: red, white, and green ribbon, with gold printed text; backside black ribbon with same text in silver. Bordered with silver and gold metallic thread and fringe, five tassels. Silk top flap with embroidered American and Hungarian flags, and a gold tin medal at end: border embossed with two eagle heads and center beige with logo of lodge and text in black. Rectangular paper envelope. Front: top left corner, image of eagle flying(?) with American flag and maker information; on back: paper circle for tying envelope closed.Dimensions2.875 x 9.625 in. Historical NotesFraternal ribbon with storage envelope from the William Penn Association, the Hungarian fraternal lodge that started in Western Pennsylvania and still has its national headquarters on the North Side.Label TextThe Verhovay Aid Association founded in 1886 offered mutual aid services to Hungarian immigrant coal miners living in Pennsylvania. After 40 years of expansion leading to more than 300 chapters nationwide, the headquarters moved to Pittsburgh in 1926. It was renamed the William Penn Association in 1972.
