William Hartman (1900-1996), was an architect from Braddock, Pennsylvania. At an early age he became interested in river boating and sailing. A friend of his father's was a riverboat captain and taught him. At the age of 17, Hartman decided to build a boat and sail it down the Mississippi River. At 18, he drew up plans and began construction in his parent's backyard a year later. It took approximately two years to build his boat. In 1923, he headed down the Mississippi River from Homestead Lock with his brother Paul, who was 15. Hartman stayed in New Orleans, Louisiana for about a year before returning home and finishing his education in architecture at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. He continued to sail into his 90s.
