According to the donor, this flag was in possession of the Edward Houston family. Houston was a merchant tailor on Smithfield St. near 4th Ave. for years--from 1835. The flag is said to have been displayed at a political convention after the GOP was formed. The first national convention was held in Philadelphia in 1856.
