DescriptionGray plastic sculpture of two cubes. Cubes connect along one of their edges and are attached to each other by plastic rods that are visible where they meet. One of the cubes has smooth sides and is open on one side; inside is a weight system inside consisting of a plastic shelf with a gray weight attached to the shelf by a bolt and a nut. The other cube has two sides with an indented rounded square and four sides with a protruding rounded square.Dimensions8.75 x 4 x 6.625 in. (22.2 x 10.2 x 16.8 cm)
SignedHand-inscribed text along the bottom edge of the smooth-sided cube reads "Aaronel de Roy Gruber ©1973 #109 a/b".
Historical NotesAaronel deRoy Gruber was a 1940 graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) who majored in costume design. Gruber started out as a painter dedicated to the Abstract Expressionist movement that dominated the mid-20th century and later, beginning in the 1960s, got involved in sculpture working in steel, Uvex, and Plexiglas. In the late 1980s she got involved in photography. Gruber continued working up until her death in 2011. Donor Terry Gruber is the son of Aaronel deRoy Gruber and Irving Gruber.
