Historical NotesWigle Whiskey t-shirt collected to document this local family-owned distillery in the Strip District. In an ode to local history they named the distillery after Philip Wigle who defied the whiskey tax in 1794, and helped to spark the Whiskey Rebellion. Wigle was the first whiskey distillery to open in Western Pennsylvania since Prohibition, but prior to that this region had been famous for its Monongahela Rye. Wigle Whiskey began distilling operations in 2011, and opened to the public in 2012. They represent not only the regions' historic ties to whiskey production, but also a new trend towards craft distilleries throughout the country.
