DescriptionPainting on a white rectangular piece of sketchbook paper. Painting has square pencil frame which contains a figure divided into four quadrants; above this is a pencil sketch. The upper left quadrant is predominantly blue with some pencil shading as well as brown, black, and orange highlights. The upper right quadrant is predominantly brown with black, and pencil highlights. The lower right quadrant is predominantly red with black, brown, and blue highlights. The lower left quadrant is white with brown, black, and pencil shading. Reverse has abstract pencil sketches.Dimensions7 x 5 in. (17.8 x 12.7 cm)Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
