DescriptionPainting on rectangular piece of cardboard. Cardboard is covered with an abstract pencil outline that is filled with paint. There is approximately an half-inch pencil border drawn around the entire image. Within the border, there is a painted image of various shades of purple and greens with some lighter blue, white, and red accents. The image is predominantly shades of green with small purple brush strokes and feathering in layers and varying colors. On the reverse, there is a pencil sketch of a group of people at a carnival or some type of fair. There are eight or nine figures depicted standing in front of a tent. In the upper left side of the image, there is what appears to be an elephant sitting on a shelf or ledge of some sort.Dimensions1.25 x 13.627 in. (3.2 x 34.6 cm)
Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
