Historical NotesNorman M. Smith served with the 58th Pennsylvania Volunteers, the 15th Cavalry, 160th PA Volunteers, and the 19th Cavalry, 180th PA Volunteers.Label TextSmith carried this saber during his service with the 15th and 19th Pennsylvania Cavalry. During the 1864 Franklin-Nashville campaign, Smith was wounded during a dramatic cavalry charge against an entrenched and fortified enemy position. In the skirmish, Smith’s regiment captured more than 350 prisoners and three Confederate flags while suffering only 25 casualties. Smith recovered from his wounds and mustered out of service in 1865 at the rank of lieutenant colonel.
