DescriptionSword and leather pouch.
U.S.-regulation pattern of 1840 non-commissioned officer's sword. Cast brass hilt with acorn finial. Grip is embossed to simulate wrapping with twisted wire. Simple D-shape knuckleguard. Steel blade, tapered, straight-line form; blade is stamped at hilt with maker text on both sides. Original leather scabbard is missing from this sword.

Blade is stamped at hilt with "U.S. / J.H. [inspector] / 1862" on one side and "Ames & Co. Chicopee, Mass." on the other.
Historical NotesSword carried by John Adams Gilleland as a sergeant with the 193rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 1864. Gilleland served in the Union Army in three separate enlistment periods: 1862-1863, 1864, and in 1865 as a 2nd lieutenant with the 77th Pennsylvania Volunteers.
