DescriptionSheet copper or copper alloy Byzantine cross.Dimensions44.4999 x 27.9999 x 4.5 in. (113 x 71.1 x 11.4 cm)Historical NotesCross from a Byzantine Catholic Church modeled after one in the Carpathian mountains in the village Circ.Label TextFounded in 1899, the Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church provided the Carpatho-Rusyns in the Monongahela Valley with a place to practice their religious traditions. In the beginning, members came from a variety of ethnicities such as Slovaks, Galicians, Hungarians, Serbians and many others. This church, located in Charleroi, was destroyed by a tornado in 1907, leaving behind only a bell tower. The church was rebuilt in 1909 in the old style, very similar to a church in the village of Circ, in the Carpathian Mountains. Placed atop three spires were 3 copper or copper alloy crosses. This second church was torn down in 1983. One of these crosses was given to Betty Swanson
