Label TextPennsylvania Day was a commemorative event held in September 1889 to dedicate monuments to Pennsylvania soldiers who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. In 1887, a commission was appointed by Governor James A. Beaver to oversee the creation of monuments dedicated to each Pennsylvania unit that fought, and $121,500 of state money was approved to fund the project. Working with veterans of these units, the commission determined the locations of each unit during the battle for accurate placement. This pin was presented to and likely worn by Governor Beaver during the dedication ceremonies.
