DescriptionCircular medal. In the center front there is a raised bust of Ulysses S. Grant facing proper right, with two branches tied together in the lower center section by a ribbon. Around the outside of the medal are two circles of decorative motifs; the internal circles consists of 37 small rectangles with two numbers within each. On back, decorative motifs around outside, with text embossed and engraved throughout center.DimensionsDiameter x Depth: 2.875 × 0.25 in. (7.3 × 0.6 cm)InscriptionsOn the reverse side in the center with raised letters reads "COMMEMORATIVE / OF THE / 36 BALLOTS / OF / THE OLD GUARD / FOR / ULYSSES S. GRANT, / FOR PRESIDENT / REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION / CHICAGO JUNE 1880."
MarksJust above the leaves on the front of the medal reads "COPYRIGHTED 1881". On the reverse side at the bottom, in small raised letters, reads "KERSHAW, ST. LOUIS".
