DescriptionCollage on large rectangular piece of white cardstock. Cardstock is covered in pieces of tissue paper and smaller pieces of colored cardstock. Bordering the left and right edges are strips of brown tissue paper. The top edge of the page has a square bordered in black tissue along three sides, inside the square are pieces of grey, yellow, green, red, pink, and orange tissue paper. Along the left edge towards bottom are notes written in pencil. The bottom half of the page has a black strip of tissue paper under a round piece of tan constrution paper. Below that is a rectangle made up of orange and pink tissue. The bottom edge of the page has green, red, and brown pieces of tissue paper.Dimensions19 x 12.406 in. (48.3 x 31.5 cm)
InscriptionsAlong the left edge towards bottom "Place for painting / for the downstairs ... / Marimekko dress ... / Painting on wall background" is written in pencil.
Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
