Historical NotesThe Slovak Civic Federation of Allegheny County was officially chartered in 1937 after a group of Slovak men from St. Gabriel's Parish in the North Side had been informally meeting since 1928. The Federation was formed to create a meeting place for people of Slovak descent, promote the customs and traditions of Slovakia, encourage and aid new Slovak immigrants, support other Slovak organizations and eventually sale alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to members on the club premises. The organization moved to several locations around the North Side until they built a new home on Stayton Street and Hodgkiss street in 1972 (where the donated sign hung). The club closed in 2009 because of waning membership.
