Raymond Simboli

Italian, 1894 - 1964
BiographyAn immigrant from Pescina, Italy, Raymond Simboli came to Pittsburgh with his family in 1901. As a youth he assisted his father, artist Peter Simboli, on numerous area murals, and later studied art at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University). Following a brief period of service in World War I, Simboli returned to Pittsburgh, where he would engage in a prolific and decorated art career. From beginnings as a portraitist and figurative painter, his work expanded to include regional scenes, landscapes, and later, still lifes and abstracts. He taught painting and drawing at several area institutions, including the Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1920-1962, and beginning in 1943, operated his own school in East Liberty. An active member of the Pittsburgh art scene, Simboli's work was shown at several Carnegie Internationals and 41 Associated Artists of Pittsburgh exhibitions, and in 1955 he was named Artist of the Year by the Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center.
