DescriptionPlaster statue of San Rocco, dressed in red cape, holding staff; dog at feet.Dimensions54 x 18 x 21 in. (137.2 x 45.7 x 53.3 cm)Label TextIn 1931, Joseph Costa brought this statue of San Rocco to Pittsburgh from his native Calabria. In the 1930s and 1940s, the statue was carried through the streets of East Liberty as part of the community’s annual San Rocco festa, or feast day, in which Italians venerated the life of this Catholic Saint. The patron saint of the diseased, Saint Rocco often appears with an open sore on his leg (purportedly a lesion from leprosy), a walking staff in his hand, and a small canine at his side.
