Historical NotesBanner from 2009 G20 Pittsburgh Summit. Nation leaders came to Pittsburgh for the September 24-25, 2009 summit to discuss financial markets and the world economy. The banners welcomed participants to Pittsburgh. Originally President Obama planned to hold the Summit in New York City, but when that did not work out, Pittsburgh was chosen as the host city. Pittsburgh represented an urban community that had recovered from a major economic downturn by transitioning its economy to new industries and the technology sector. The G20 showcased Pittsburgh’s achievements on an international stage.
