Label TextThe Irene Kaufmann Settlement (IKS) was founded in 1911 to serve the needs of the thousands of Eastern European Jews who were arriving in Pittsburgh. The IKS, which was non-sectarian, provided a wide range of services, including health clinics, English classes, theater clubs and athletics; all designed to help acculturate the new Americans. This championship sweater is significant because of the role that the IKS basketball program played in helping players acquire scholarships to college, especially to Duquesne University, a Catholic institution located in the Hill District
