Historical NotesBoots worn by Will Cross during Novolog Peaks & Poles Challenge, Mt. Everest expedition, May 2006. With an elevation of roughly 29,000 feet, Mount Everest presents climbers with extremely challenging conditions--freezing temperatures, violent winds, and the constant threat of avalanches. For Will Cross, a type-1 diabetic, the mountain posed an even greater challenge. Difficulties with weather and a shortage of oxygen forced Cross to turn back on two previous attempts to climb Everest, but he succeeded on his third attempt in 2006. Leaving family and friends in Pittsburgh on March 28th, Will reached the summit nearly two months later on May 23rd.
