Historical NotesPhotograph portrait of Samuel Nixon (1848-1918) that hung in the Nixon Theater lobby. Samuel F. Nixon was the owner of the Nixon Theatre. The theater, located on 6th Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh, was an ornate Beaux Arts structure, crowned by a large dome. It was built in 1903 and was torn down in 1950. During its lifetime, it was Pittsburgh's premier performance venue. The Alcoa building was built on the site. Nixon owned a string of theaters across the Midwest, but he was based in Philadelphia.
