Historical NotesKeystone View Company, located in Meadville, Pennsylvania, was at one time the largest producer of stereographs in the world. They operated from 1892 to 1963 when the company was bought by Mast Development Corporation. In 1972, the Meadville manufacturing site was closed. Benneville Lloyd Singley, a native of Union Township, founded the company after time spent working as a salesman for Underwood & Underwood. He ended up in Meadville after enrolling in Allegheny College. He did much of the photography for the stereoscope cards himself starting with the flooding of Meadville by French Creek in 1892. They started producing stereoscopes as well as cards around 1898. Keystone innovated by producing educational kits to accompany their stereoscope images. They eventually bought the majority of their competitors' negatives and continued to produce their own until they had an inventory of over 2 million negatives. Their collection was donated to the University of California in 1978.
