Historical NotesThe DePaul School for Hearing and Speech was founded in 1908 by the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Sisters of Charity Seton Hill with goal of providing listening and spoken language education for children. The school has previously been known as the Pittsburgh School for the Deaf and DePaul Institute and has had locations in the Lappe Mansion on the North Side of Pittsburgh and Mt. Lebanon. In 2002, the school was moved to the site of the former Sacred Heart High School in Shadyside. The hearing aid case is waterproof and would have been distributed to students in the 1990s and 2000s. This type of case is no longer used anymore because hearing aids are now manufactured to be waterproof.
