Historical NotesThis Family Radiation Measurement Kit was purchased by donor Dr. John A. Redfield in 1961 to go in the family fallout shelter in the basement of their home at 3514 Forest Road in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The donor built a shelter in the basement complete with a cinder block ceiling and cinder block and concrete walls. His wife stocked it with peanut butter and canned fruit and planned on grabbing crackers on the way down. The plan was that the family would stay down in the shelter and use the radiation kit to measure when it was safe to exit. He said that he felt a responsibility to have a plan in place in case of nuclear attack given what Khrushchev was threatening at the time. The donor worked at Westinghouse/Bettis for 39 years and specifically on the nuclear reactor at Shippingport. He developed the FLASH program in 1964 which became the standard for safety testing of nuclear reactors and then oversaw the LWBR or Light Water Breeder Reactor, the third reactor at Shippingport which Admiral Rickover hoped would be a test for nuclear reactors that could breed additional energy. The reactor ran for five years until it was spent. Redfield retired in 1994.
