Historical Notes1983 Mount Alvernia PIAA Champion Girl's Basketball Class A trophy.Label TextMount Alvernia PIAA Champion, Girl's Basketball Class A trophy, 1983 This small Catholic school became the first WPIAL team to go through an entire season with an undefeated record. Led by legendary Coach De Porucznik, the Lions dominated Class A in 1983 and finished 34-0. The team defeated Bishop Boyle 81-45 in the WPIAL championship game and then won the PIAA final, beating Trinity Catholic of Camp Hill, 78-52. In 34 games the team averages 73 points per game, and outscored opponents by an average of 34 points. Ranked 25th in the nation by "USA Today," five members of the team went on to play college basketball, including team captain Karen Hall who set the record for career steals at UNLV.
