Historical NotesFarklebeary Bear sold as a fundraiser for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Label TextA holiday fundraiser to support Children’s Hospital led to the creation of this distinctive purple bear. KDKA radio personality Jack Bogut broadcast for charity from inside holiday window displays at downtown department stores starting in 1968. While on air, he happened upon an endearing word – farkleberry. What started as radio banter turned into an engaging method to raise money. Bogut auctioned off farkleberry tarts, farkleberry cookies, fake farkleberry bushes, and even the chance to say his catch phrase, “Start your heart, eat a farkleberry tart,” on the radio.
