DescriptionPaper, wood, and metal parasol. Wooden (possibly bamboo?) ribs painted black extend the parasol open. When parasol is opened, paper material is orange with a yellow band of color around the center. There are orange and yellow flowers with green leaves printed on the parasol, as well as a green and yellow butterfly. Tip of parasol is metal with a hanging device attached, and metal part at the top is black, red, and silver. Silver part has embossed text on it. On inside of opened parasol, there is an elaborate wooden stretcher structure in the center. Bamboo shaft in center, with off-white material wrapped around the bottom of the shaft for the handle. DimensionsHeight x Length x Depth (closed): 2.25 x 30.5 x 2.75 in. (5.7 x 77.5 x 7 cm)
Marks"MADE IN / JAPAN" embossed on tip of umbrella.
Historical NotesAccording to the donor's family, this parasol belonged to Elizabeth Jane Cochran Seaman. She is better known by her pen name Nellie Bly.
