Historical NotesIsrael Histadrut Campaign banner. From the collection of Edward and Sylvia Steinfeld . Histadrut is the central association of trade unions in Israel. It was founded in Haifa, Israel in 1920 to centralize labor activities and welfare efforts for Jewish workers. Affiliate councils formed in Jewish communities around the United States to assist in fundraising activities, particularly through “Israel Campaigns.” The Steinfeld family was active in one of those affiliate councils in Pittsburgh. Edward “Eddie” Steinfeld (c.1915-1990) was a local entertainer and Jewish communal activist. He was known as an actor in performances at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, in local television commercial and independent movies, and in newspaper advertisements. He was a leader of the local Yiddish theatre movement and the founder and executive director of the Hartwood Theatre on the Green at Hartwood Acres park. He was a founding member of the local branch of Poale Zion (“Workers of Zion”), an international Labor Zionist organization. He was director of the Israel Histadrut campaign in Pittsburgh from 1965-1980 and was chairman of the Labor Zionist Educational Center. His wife Sylvia Steinfeld (d. 1974) was also active in Zionist activities in the Pittsburgh region from an early age. After her death, her family established the “Sylvia Steinfeld Memorial Room” at the Histadrut-Pittsburgh Medical Center in Ramat Gan, Israel. Edward and Sylvia Steinfeld had one child, Malke Steinfeld Frank, who is the donor.
