DescriptionLeather-wrapped metal match container. Oblong cylindrical silver metal container with black leather wrapped around center. Twisted metal band detail borders leather. Proper left end has hinged cover that opens to large internal compartment. Old museum collection number marked in yellow on reverse of proper left cover "X.1504.5"; some of the number is obscured by white paper remnants and there is possible yellow text loss.

Historical NotesMatch container that advertises for Wm. H. Jacob, No. 7 Union Street, Near Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA. Jacob operated a hotel and bar at this address. Jacob was born in 1861 in the First Ward of Pittsburgh and died in 1922. The Pittsburgh Press mentioned Jacob as one of many applicants before the liquor control board throughout his career and was opposed by the Anti-Saloon League. In 1891, when he presented for his license he said he served on average 200 for dinner. Donated in 1971 by an anonymous donor to the Historical Society of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Then transferred to the Senator John Heinz History Center in 2018.
