Historical NotesThis concertina (or squeezebox) first belonged to Paolo Andreatta, the donor’s paternal grandfather. Paolo's eldest son, Paolo, brought the concertina to America along with his clarinet from the Levico City Band, of which he was a member from 1924-28. The concertina speaks to the region of Italy where the Andreatta family is from – Trentino, which was formerly administered by the Hapsburg Empire until WWI, is influenced culturally by German speaking countries. The donor’s paternal family immigrated to Ambridge, Pennsylvania in 1928 from the region of Trentino in Northeastern Italy. Paolo Sr. came to America on August 3, 1922 and declared his intent to become an American citizen on March 24, 1925. In his declaration, he states that his wife, Maria Bailoni, is living in Levico, Italy with their four children, Giuseppina, Paolo, Mario, and Virgil, while he lives in Chisholm, Minnesota. After he naturalizes in Pennsylvania in 1928, his wife and children are able to secure visas to travel to America.
