DescriptionOff-white knee-length fabric slip. Scoop neck with lace band around neckline and ruffled lace trim; off-white string woven through neckline lace with string ends hanging down back. Sleeveless with ruffled lace trim around armscyes. Top of bodice has three bands of lace alternating with one band of off-white fabric and one band of off-white eyelet fabric which has four inset lace panels. Torso has seven vertical pleats. Full skirt. Bottom of skirt has found bands of lace alternating with off-white fabric bands and scalloped bottom edge. Back opening has six buttonholes with four corresponding white plastic buttons; two buttons are missing.DimensionsHeight x Width (Width is at chest): 45.5 × 18 in. (115.6 × 45.7 cm)
Historical NotesSlip worn by Francis Zoglmann Lorson. Francis came to Pittsburgh in 1899, at the age of 15 after her mother Barbara died. Her brother Wolfgang had come to Pittsburgh in 1893, and opened Zoglmann’s Saloon at 601 Carson Street. The Zoglmann’s had a brother Anton who stayed in Germany. Francis worked at her brother’s business and the family lived above. She met her future husband, Mathias Lorson, who was employed at A.M. Byers, when he would come in to the bar to cash his checks. Francis and Mathias were married in 1911. They had four children, but Mathias died of a brain tumor when their oldest child was 18. According to donor Phyllis Tomko, Francis worked on and off at the bar into her old age, she remembers her going in on Tuesdays to clean.
