Historical NotesPittsburgh Pirates home uniform worn by Bill Mazeroski. Bill Mazeroski, 1960-2013; Hunt Auctions, 2013; Thomas Tull, 2013-2017; donated to Heinz History CenterLabel TextAfter celebrating in the locker room with his teammates, Maz put these items from the 1960 World Series away for safekeeping. The National Baseball Hall of Fame did display the bat years ago in its Autumn Glory exhibit along with Maz’s helmet, but most of the items in Bill Mazeroski’s collection, including his bronzed cleats, remained in his home until being auctioned in 2013. Thomas Tull, a long-time Pittsburgh sports fan and part-Steelers owner, placed the winning bids for the uniform and bat. Through the Tull’s generosity, these now belong to the History Center. The yellow discoloration of this wool jersey is attributed to the shower of champagne Maz received during the locker room celebration after his walk-off home run clinched the ’60 World Series. The entire city celebrated the dramatic home run and the Bucs first championship in 35 years. After the game Bill and wife Milene left Forbes Field, found a bench in nearby Schenley Park, and sat quietly together as the rest of the city reveled in victory. Mazeroski wore this Rawlings size 44 jersey and these 36 inch waist, 25 inch inseam pants during the most dramatic moment in Pittsburgh Pirates history. The Pirates retired his number 9 in 1987.
