Historical NotesPittsburgh Rockets Drum and Bugle Corps uniform from 1971 that belonged to donor Sharon Lunn. Sharon was a member of the Pittsburgh Rockets Drum and Bugle Corps in 1971, the one and only year they allowed women. The Corps was started in 1947 by a group of WWII veterans that belonged to the Homewood American Legion Post 351. The group was originally called the Homewood Rockets. The Corps became one of the premier national drum and bugle Corps in the country. In 1971, over many protests, they allowed four women to join as part of the colorguard, they carried sabers and performed with four men who carried rifles and bayonets. They were not allowed to travel with the group and were chaperoned. After 1971 they decided not to admit women the next year. The Rockets stopped performing over the next couple of years.
