Historical NotesSlovak fraternal ribbon belonging to John Laba. The donor, Samuel Laba's paternal grandfather (John Laba's father) emigrated to the United States in 1912 from Zbojné, Slovakia with his son and daughter to avoid WWI. The grandmother, Zuzi Laba, never came over and the papers show that they sent her money. Their son John Laba (1894-1986) met Anna Valalik (1904-1992) in the United States, but she was also an immigrant from Radun, Slovakia. John got a job at Pittsburgh Forge and Iron Company and then he and his wife settled in Ambridge, PA. Eventually, John worked for the American Bridge Company. He sponsored his younger sister Anna so that she could come to the United States in 1920.
