Historical NotesThis Nativity set is most commonly found in churches, not homes, but the donor Mark Marchetti's father Joseph Marchetti worked as an artist at the Joseph Poli Company, the manufacturer of this Nativity. It was given to the donor and his wife in the 1980s, and they displayed it in their home every year at Christmastime. Joseph Marchetti and his father, Emil Marchetti, both worked at the Joseph Poli Company and spent most of their time painting plaster statuary. Emil came to Pittsburgh from Lucca, Italy, which is where the Poli family emigrated from. Many churches own Nativities made by Joseph Poli Company. From early summer through the fall the company would make sets to sell for the upcoming Christmas season; the donor could tell which ones his father painted because he always gave Mary pink shoes.
