Historical NotesThis kneeboard and set of cue cards was used by Jay Apt during ground simulator training and in flight on Space Shuttle mission STS-79 in September 1996. The top cue card (with the word FAILURES in the top right corner) was used in training for launch (ascent). The seven lines in the top left are abort mode boundaries. Below these are lines on which to log ascent performance and actions to be taken after main engine cutoff (MECO). To the right is a blank space to note failures. The matrix at the bottom was used to note data processing system configuration changes necessitated by failures. The second, third, and fourth cue cards were used during simulations and flight during the rendezvous with Mir to orchestrate responses to failures. The next cue card was used during landing to manage failures in the Shuttle’s air data probes, deployed shortly before landing. The cue card labeled “Post Docking Timeline” was written by Jay Apt to orchestrate actions that various crew members on STS-79 needed to take soon after the Shuttle Atlantis docked to Mir. The cue card with images of three displays that could be called up on the Shuttle’s cockpit display screens was to help Jay Apt manage the SpaceHab module systems and their failures during ground simulations and flight. The colors indicated which electronics and multiplexer/demultiplexer (MDM) fed which parameters on the display (a loss of one MDM could make its data invalid). The hand-drawn electrical schematic cue card was developed by Jay Apt to help understand and manage the electrical feeds to the SpaceHab systems (front) payloads carried in the SpaceHab (back). The cue card labeled OI-21 Dragchute SSME Repositioning was used during landing simulations and flight by Jay Apt to help manage failures related to the three Shuttle hydraulic systems.
