Historical NotesApollo 11 press pass belonging to Jay Apt. Jay Apt was the Business Manager of Model Rocketry magazine in the late 1960s. The monthly magazine had a peak circulation of approximately 50,000. Four magazine masthead staffers were granted press passes for the launch of the first mission to attempt a human landing on Earth’s moon. In addition to Apt, these were Gordon Mandell, George Flynn, and William Bengen. The four travelled by airline to Orlando thence by rental car to Kennedy Space Center the night before the 9:32 AM launch. Catching some sleep in the press dome, they saw and felt the Saturn V launch that carried Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins to the moon. Apt does not have a middle initial; the “M.” was mistakenly added to the pass.
