Historical NotesTravel mug used by Darren Miller's historic swim across the English Channel on July 19, 2010. Liquid food was placed inside the mug, which was floated to him as he swam. Miller became the 833rd person to conquer the Channel and possibly the first Pittsburgher. Miller, 28 of Delmont, Pennsylvania, has been an avid athlete and swimmer his entire life, competing for Franklin Regional High School and at the collegiate level for Penn State University. In 2010, Miller was training to become the first to complete the "Ocean's Seven" Challenge, the world's seven most difficult channel swims by 2013. This challenge has not been accomplished by anyone as of 2010. Since swimming the English Channel, Miller has also completed swims across the Catalina and Molokai Channels. 100% of all donations contributed in honor of Miller's efforts benefit the "Forever Fund" and Team Forever, a charitable foundation that Miller and Cathy Cartieri Mehl have established. This foundation is dedicated to the memory of Mehl's father, Anthony Frank Cartieri, and aids families in their struggle to afford the costs associated with infant cardiothoracic surgery that takes place in the cardiothoracic unit of UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
